Half-hearted Apology
by Nicole Koroch

It's simple.
It went like this:

I went through your things.

All of your drawers, closets, boxes.
Loving, and exact.

I found your old wedding pictures.

I threw them in the garbage.

            Except for one.

It was of your mother.  A tiny sea-shell dangled from one lobe
and the bronze of her suit reflected against the line
of her chin.

I could not part with that one.

In return
I can act like it never happened.
