Morning Ritual

For Grace, age 6 months
I want to wake her,
see her smile,
hear her delighted
laugh.
But since I’m leaving
for work,
it’s her mother,
still asleep,
who’d be left
to deal with
the consequences.
So I refrain,
contenting myself
to touch her hand
and caress
her little fingers.
